What is the IMAT?
The International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) is the entrance exam for English-language public medical schools in Italy. Admission is based solely on the IMAT score. It allows students to apply to Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Dentistry, and a combined Medical and Engineering degree at select universities.

The test will take place on Wednesday, 17th September 2025.
Registration opens from the 26th of August to the 09th September 2025, until 15:00 (GMT +2)
Registration is done exclusively through the Universitaly portal.
In Italy, the exam starts at 11:00 AM (GMT+2). Times vary by country. Please consult the test center map for further details about the exam start time.
Make sure to be present at least three hours before the exam starts.
The test includes 60 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 100 minutes:
- 4 Reading Skills & General Knowledge
- 5 Logical Reasoning & Problem Solving
- 23 Biology
- 15 Chemistry
- 13 Physics & Mathematics
The scores are as follows:
- +1.5 points for correct answers
- -0.4 points for incorrect answers
- 0 points for unanswered questions
- Maximum score: 90
Tie-breakers are applied in this order:
- Section scores (biology, chemistry, etc.)
- Language certification
- Disability certification
- Age (younger candidate ranks higher)
Your status affects application procedures, seat availability, and cut-off scores. Non-EU students can only apply to one university.
Cut-offs vary by university and year. Historically:
- Non-EU: Safe score < 61
- EU: Safe score in low 50s

Please note that the number of available seats may vary between places and they tend to fill up quickly; make sure to register as soon as possible.
